FAU's Jazz Rats Big Band Joined by Pianist Dick Hyman
BOCA RATON, FL (November 12, 2004) - Florida Atlantic University's School of the Arts presents an afternoon of jazz with FAU's own Jazz Rats Big Band, featuring guest soloist Dick Hyman on Sunday, November 21 at 3 p.m. The concert will take place in the University Theatre on FAU's Boca Raton campus at 777 Glades Road. General admission is $15 with group discounts available. FAU students, faculty, staff and alumni may obtain free admission with ID.
Hyman has long been recognized as a modern master of jazz piano. He has appeared on over 100 albums under his own name, and many more as a contributing musician. Hyman's credits include music he has written for television, the theatre and motion pictures. He and the Jazz Rats will give the South Florida premiere of his suite entitled "The Longest Blues in the World." This piece explores the many and varied forms the blues can take. From swing band blues to Afro-Cuban sounds, to ballad and vocal blues, this piece covers the gamut, and the Jazz Rats will add their own solo sounds to the mix as well. In addition to Hyman's suite, there will be several original compositions for jazz ensemble by trumpeter Dave Gibble.
The Jazz Rats Big Band is a group of artists-in-residence at FAU. It was formed in 1995 by faculty member Tim Walters and is currently directed by Walters. The November 21 concert will include solos by saxophonists Neal Bonsanti, Richie Conn and Mike Brignola, trumpeters Jason Carder, Dave Gibble and Paul Ayick, and trombonists Gerry Chamberlain and Joe Tiso. Rhythm section solos will be heard from drummer Tony Lavender, pianist Dave Hammer, guitarist Mike Kaplan, bassist Robb Rimmington and vibraphonist Gary Mayone.
Tickets may be purchased by calling 561-297-2977 or emailing artstickets@fau.edu , or they may be purchased at the event one hour prior to the performance. The concert is presented by the School of the Arts' Department of Music in FAU's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, in partnership with Bank of America and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.
