FAU's Theatre Department Presents Pulitzer-Prize Winning Drama "Picnic"

BOCA RATON, FL (October 5, 2004) - Step back into small-town life of the '50s with Florida Atlantic University's presentation of William Inge's "Picnic," to be staged Friday, October 8 through Sunday, October 17. The play will be held at the University Theatre on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. Shows run October 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. and October 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. Individual tickets may be purchased for $16, with group discounts available. FAU faculty, staff and alumni may purchase a ticket for $10 with ID, and FAU students may receive tickets for free with ID.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning drama tells a tale of lust and coming of age in a small Kansas town of the 1950s. The story opens outside the home of Flo Owens, a middle-aged widow who lives with her two daughters. On this hot summer day, a handsome, sexy stranger arrives in town who will shake the people who live there to their cores. Hal Carter represents all the wants and desires of the women in town. He is the something else out there that they have been looking for, and they act on it. Flo may be the voice of reason as she worries about her daughters, but the rest of the women in town see Hal as a way to escape their dreary and isolated lives. Written in 1953, this play was considered to be groundbreaking for theatre of that day. Sex and lust were on stage for the first time, and themes of want and desire were discussed openly.

"Inge's portrayal of lust and love was new back in 1953," said Gail Garrisan, guest director of "Picnic" and adjunct professor at FAU, "but his portrayal of the lonely souls who are looking for something else, something more, is a portrayal that is still fresh for audiences today."

This performance is presented by the School of the Arts' Department of Theatre in FAU's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, in partnership with Bank of America and the Palm Beach County Cultural Council.
Tickets may be purchased by calling 561-297-2977 or emailing artstickets@fau.edu , or they may be purchased at the theatre one hour prior to performance.
