FAU Student Wins State Co-op Student of the Year Award
BOCA RATON, FL (August 19, 2004) - For the second consecutive year, Florida Atlantic University has gained state-wide recognition in the co-operative education community as FAU student Scott Newson was named the Co-op Student of the Year by the Florida Career Professionals Association.
Newson, an accounting major who maintained a 3.7 GPA, was recently an audit intern with Enrst & Young. Previously, he worked for a property management company for four terms. Newson's future plans include taking the CPA exam, with the goal of pursing a career in real estate accounting.
Newson has been involved in numerous charitable and student organizations as a tutor, volunteer and leader. Among other activities, he has been a research assistant, a note taker for students with disabilities and a dedicated organizer of toy drives for the Salvation Army. A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Newson plays on the FAU men's golf team, and was named the 2002 FAU Male Student Athlete of the Year.
The Career Development Center hosted a luncheon and awards ceremony in recognition of Newson's award. Among those attending the luncheon were Dr. Dennis Coates, associate dean of the College of Business; Betsy Sias, director of the Office of Career Placement and Internships in the College of Business; Melani Lansa, from the Office of Career Placement and Internships; Dr. Emanuel Newsome, vice president for student affairs; Dr. Connie Foley, assistant-vice president for student affairs; Dr. Leslie Bates, dean of students; Brenda Coto, coordinator, Internet Coast Institute; Donna Garcia, senior manager of Ernst &Young, and the staff of the Career Development Center.
