FAU Names Dr. Michael Friedland to Assist in Development
of Medical School Program Partnership
BOCA RATON, FL (July 13, 2004) - As Florida Atlantic University and the University of Miami School of Medicine begin a two-year medical school program partnership, Dr. Michael Friedland will join FAU in the fall as senior associate dean for biomedical science to help lead this landmark endeavor. In addition, as part of this new role, Friedland will work closely with UM and Boca Raton Community Hospital in the planning process that could lead to the development of a four-year medical education program partnership.
Friedland comes to FAU after serving as dean of West Virginia University's Health Sciences Center regional campus in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. While dean, he was charged with development of this program and worked with regional community hospitals and community based physicians to create a new community based regional campus.
Friedland received his MD degree from SUNY-Downstate Medical Center in 1967 and trained in internal medicine at Kings County Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine and hematology. Friedland's first faculty position was at Brown University and involved developing the new medical school's IM medicine educational programs and resident recruitment. He has served as dean at the clinical campus in Binghamton, NY, a regional campus that trains 3rd and 4th year medical students from SUNY Upstate. Friedland has also held positions as dean of medicine and vice president for health affairs at Texas A&M University's Health Science Center and dean of medicine at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.
Friedland is the author of numerous papers and several book chapters. He has served as chair of several visiting committees for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the body responsible for accreditation of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada. Friedland has extensive experience with regional medical campuses, community based educational models and community based physicians. He also was actively involved in the clinical practice of hematology and oncology for over twenty years.
