FAU Students Helping to Develop New Products at Motorola
BOCA RATON, FL (June 18, 2004) - Florida Atlantic University researchers and students are revolutionizing the wireless phone industry. Funded by Motorola's iDEN® Subscriber Group in Plantation, FAU's Department of Computer Science and Engineering is helping several research and service projects in the area of designing and testing new wireless phones and mobile devices.
Three FAU faculty members are heading the projects, while approximately 65 graduate and undergraduate students are participating through either research or service.
"These projects provide a unique opportunity for faculty and graduate students in our department," said Dr. Borko Furht, chair of the Department. "The objective of the projects is to utilize revolutionary techniques and tools to reduce product development cycle time of Motorola's wireless devices. These challenging tasks allow both our faculty and students to cope with real-time problems and to work on highly sophisticated and important industrial research projects."
However, the results of the projects go beyond just the research. The projects have the ability to involve many faculty members and generate many doctoral dissertations. In addition, as a result of the partnership, Motorola has hired five of the graduating students full-time.
Jaime Borras, corporate vice president of Motorola in Plantation said the company is working to enhance engineering productivity to get products to the customers in a more timely fashion. "We are very happy with the results from the collaboration with FAU," said Borras. "It is positive for both entities, with FAU students applying their examples from college to the real world and for Motorola, getting support in revolutionizing the design process."
