FAU Names Nathan Dean as Dean of Charles E. Schmidt College of Science

BOCA RATON, FL (June 1, 2004) - Florida Atlantic University's Provost John F. Pritchett announced the appointment of Dr. Nathan W. Dean as dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. Dean has been serving as interim dean since 2002.

"I sincerely believe that we must have continuity of leadership based upon the significant initiatives we have underway in the College," said Pritchett. "Dr. Dean has provided strong leadership for the college and the faculty overwhelmingly supported him. I am delighted that he is willing to provide us with continuing near-term leadership."

"I am immensely gratified by the support I've received from the faculty of the College and from Dr. Pritchett," said Dean. "I look forward to continued progress along the College's trajectory toward excellence through ongoing improvement in teaching and research. The initiation of our joint medical program with the University of Miami, and our partnerships with other entities including Scripps Research Institute, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and the US Geological Service, make this a time of extraordinary momentum for us. I'm happy to be a part of it."

Dean, who is also professor of physics, came to FAU in 1993 as vice president for the Boca Raton campus and served as vice provost from 1996 until 2002. He received a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a doctorate from Cambridge University in England, where he was a U.S. Churchill Scholar. Before coming to FAU, he held academic and administrative positions at Iowa State University, the University of Georgia and the State University of New York at Binghamton.
