BOCA RATON, FL (May 13, 2004) - Florida Atlantic University's engineering team finished second overall in the Student Chapter Design Competition and earned a $2000 cash prize for the FAU student chapter. The competition was held at the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) Florida Water Resources Convention in Kissimmee last month.
A team of six students, Frederic Morin, Jennifer Magnus, Mike Genduso, Jean-Joseph Aubanel, Matt Maxey and Ronald Desbrunes, from an environmental science and engineering class located in FAU's College of Engineering entered to fulfill one of the requirements of the class. The FAU team was comprised of two transportation majors, one geotechnical, one structural, one water resources and an environmental major. This was the first time FAU participated in this contest.
The purpose of the competition was to solicit traditional or non-traditional concepts for the design of a new aerobic digestion system for the existing water reclamation facility in West Palm Beach, utilizing some of the existing equipment and tankage.
The competition was set up to be completed in one semester. Other teams that participated were University of Central Florida, University of Miami and two University of Florida teams.
