Unites FAU Territory With Football Unity Run FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (March
19, 2004) - In an effort to symbolically unite all the communities Florida
Atlantic University serves, FAU Head Football Coach Howard Schnellenberger will
spread his team to the north and south edges of FAU territory and relay-run them
back to the Boca Raton campus in the first ever FAU Football Unity Run.
On Saturday, March 20, one group of players will run south from the FAU Jupiter
campus while another group will run north from the FAU Davie campus. The team
running the Broward county leg, escorted by the Broward Sheriff's Office, will
depart Davie around noon and head east in order to reach Fort Lauderdale Beach
between 3 - 4 p.m.
FAU football players,
in jerseys and helmets, will run along AIA drawing the attention of thousands
of spring-breakers and other beachgoers. Additionally, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim
Naugle and Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce President Christopher Pollack,
both distinguished FAU alumni, will join Coach Schnellenberger in the Fort Lauderdale
Beach leg of the relay. (NOTE: Best viewing of the run will be between Las
Olas Boulevard and Beachplace from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m.)
In addition, a group of FAU alumni will gather at Shula's on the Beach restaurant
at the Sheraton Yankee Trader (321 North Fort Lauderdale Beach) at 3 p.m. to cheer
the runners as they travel along A1A. (NOTE: Naugle, Pollack, Schnellenberger,
FAU administrators and other alumni will be available at Shula's for photos and
media comment at 3:15.)
The Unity
Run will conclude around 6 p.m. at the Tom Oxley Center on the Boca Raton campus.
