Physics Department Hosts International Conference BOCA
RATON, FL (March 16, 2004) - The Physics Department
in Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, in conjunction
with the Center for Gravitational Wave Physics at Penn State University, will
host a three-day conference beginning Thursday, March 18 entitled, "EVO:
Evolutions in Numerical Relativity."
The
international conference will address key issues involved in the detection of
gravitational waves spawned from cataclysmic cosmic events throughout the universe
and will directly support the National Science Foundation's LIGO Gravitational
Wave Observatory.
"These gravitational
waves, which were predicted by Einstein in 1915 and are still considered the standard
geometric theory of gravity, are on the verge of being detected," said Dr.
Warner Miller, chair of the FAU Physics department. "They provide the deepest
probe into the hearts of the biggest energy-producing engines known in our universe;
the collision of black holes, galaxies, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae and neutron
star dynamics."
Additional information
on the conference can be found on the College web site at www.physics.fau.edu.
