Gonzalo
Rubalcaba Trio and Bobby Shew Coming to FAU's Jazz Weekend BOCA
RATON (March 12, 2004) - Jazz lovers can get
their fill of jazz at Florida Atlantic University's first annual Jazz Festival
which will take place Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21 in the University
Theatre on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio
and Bobby Shew will headline the weekend with other performances by FAU's Uwwalo
Messengers and Dame Más.
Afternoon
events on Saturday, March 20 will include performances by school ensembles at
noon and a jazz clinic with Bobby Shew at 3:30 p.m. Then, at 7:30 p.m., the Gonzalo
Rubalcaba Trio will perform along with FAU's Dame Más. On Sunday, March
21, Bobby Shew will perform at 3 p.m. with FAU's Uwwalo Messengers. The Saturday
afternoon events are free and admission for either the Saturday night concert
or the Sunday afternoon concert is $15. FAU students, faculty and staff admission
is free for these concerts.
The Gonzalo
Rubalcaba Trio is known for its fusion of Jazz and Latin rhythms. The trio is
comprised of Gonzalo Rubalcaba on piano, Ignacio Berroa on drums and Armando Gola
on bass. Rubalcaba has become quite a sensation in the United States since his
introduction to the U.S. audience in 1986. Since then, he has released eleven
CDs. He received a Latin Grammy for Jazz Album of the Year for the album "Supernova"
in 2002 and a Grammy for co-production of a CD with Charlie Haden of Nocturne.
He also has eight Grammy nominations, including four for Jazz Album of the Year.
"More than almost any pianist since
the passing of Bill Evans, [Rubalcaba] truly has the capacity to make his instrument
sing," according to the Los Angeles Times.
Bobby
Shew started playing the trumpet at age 10. He has played with the Tommy Dorsey
Orchestra, Woody Herman's band, Benny Goodman, Maynard Ferguson and many other
big bands.
Shew became known for his strong
lead playing and began doing studio work for TV shows and live productions. He
also began recording his own albums and was nominated for a Grammy in 1980 and
was awarded the Jazz Album of the Year in 1983 for "Heavy Company."
