FAU To Break Ground on

Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Building

BOCA RATON, FL (February 10, 2004) – Florida Atlantic University broke ground on a new home for the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing on Tuesday, February 10 at 10:30 a.m. on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.

“It was with much anticipation and a great deal of excitement that we broke ground on a building that will provide many services to FAU’s students and the community at large,” said FAU President Frank T. Brogan. “The training and services offered through this College are invaluable, a gift to those who partake.”

The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing building, which received a $10 million gift from Christine E. Lynn, will be a unique state-of-the-art facility. The 75,000 square foot, three-story building will serve as a beacon for nurses.

“We are so grateful to Mrs. Lynn for this extraordinary gift,” said Dr. Anne Boykin, dean of FAU’s College of Nursing. “This unique environment will encourage and support teaching, research and scholarly activities and nursing practice, and position the College to provide innovative leadership in nursing education. It will welcome and house individuals into a community whose commitment is to nurture the wholeness of a person and environment through caring.”

The College of Nursing building, set to open in the late-spring of 2005, embodies a distinctive design philosophy, guided by principles of Feng Shui and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). The new home will house an auditorium, classroom and seminar space, offices for staff and faculty, in addition to specifically designed spaces for students and the community, including a holistic practice area, sacred space for contemplation and self-renewal and a healing labyrinth garden. The educational technology offered through the College of Nursing will provide an opportunity to create innovative software for the study of nursing within a Caring philosophy.

“I am so excited about the new Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing project,” said Mrs. Lynn. “The building will be a state-of-the-art facility and will be known not only in our own community, but nationally as well. The most important thing to me is to graduate the best nurses possible to help the local and national nursing shortage situation.”

As a registered nurse, Christine E. Lynn understands the importance of quality healthcare and has demonstrated a personal commitment to enhancing community healthcare resources and supporting nursing education. In 2001, FAU’s College of Nursing was named for Mrs. Lynn in lasting tribute to her generous gift of $10 million. Mrs. Lynn has been awarded honorary degrees from Lynn University and Florida Atlantic University. Among the many other honors she received are the Outstanding Philanthropic Award for Leadership from Rotary International and the International Humanitarian Award from the American College Dublin.
