FAU Students Open Income Tax Assistance Center
DAVIE, FL (January 7, 2004) The Florida Atlantic University Accounting Student Association on the Davie campus will open a new Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Center on Friday, January 16, 2004. The center will operate in FAUs Liberal Arts Building, 2912 College Avenue, Davie in room 303F every Friday morning from 9:30 a.m. until noon through tax season.
VITA provides free tax preparation services for families with incomes under $35,000 and individuals with incomes under $15,000, as well as to individuals with special needs who file Forms 1040EZ, 1040A or a basic Form 1040. Accounting student volunteers will have completed FAUs introductory taxation course and special VITA training on income tax preparation. Volunteers working in the Center have passed an exam to become certified.
I was overwhelmed by the large number of accounting students willing to be trained, tested and certified to become volunteer tax return preparers, said Dr. Sharon Lassar, CPA, associate professor of accounting at FAU and volunteer trainer. With our students assistance we will be able to help a great number of our community members.
For more information, please contact Dr. Lassar at 954-236-1067.
