FAU Hosts Lecture Focusing on Neurodegenerative Diseases
Jeffery W. Kelly to Open Frontiers of Science Lecture Series
BOCA RATON, FL (January 21, 2004) The Florida Atlantic Universitys Charles E. Schmidt College of Science will present a lecture on the topic of The Chemistry and Biology of Neurodegenerative Diseases by Dr. Jeffery W. Kelly. The lecture will take place Thursday, January 22 at 4 p.m. in the Charles E. Schmidt Biomedical Science Center, Room 126, on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
Dr. Kelly earned his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina and is the Lita Annenberg Hazen Professor of Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute in LaJolla, California.
The central theme of his research is to understand the chemistry and biology of peptides and proteins and to develop new approaches for manipulating these properties with purposefully-designed small molecules. Spectroscopic and biophysical methods in combination with chemical synthesis and recombinant DNA technology are used to accomplish this. One of the groups research projects includes discovering inhibitors to develop therapeutic strategies for treating Huntingtons Disease.
The Frontiers of Science Lecture Series, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science with support from FAUs Lifelong Learning Society Endowed Professorship. This is the first of four lectures ending March 25.
