Regional Experts to Discuss Prospects for Peace in the Middle East, Europe and Latin America
BOCA RATON, FL (December 30, 2003) -- Florida Atlantic University's Lifelong Learning Society and the Peace Studies Program of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents "Bringing Peace to Troubled Regions," a one-day conference hosting regional experts to discuss prospects for peace in the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. The conference will be held Thursday, January 8 at 9:30 a.m. in the Lifelong Learning Society Auditorium of FAU's Boca Raton campus at 777 Glades Road in Boca Raton. The conference will be repeated Friday, January 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Regency Theatre of FAU's MacArthur campus, 5353 Parkside Drive in Jupiter. High-ranking United Nations and United States government officials, Gillian Martin Sorensen and Ambassador Princeton Lyman will provide the keynote addresses, explaining the role of the U.N. in bringing peace to troubled regions. Sorenson served from 1993 to 2003 as Assistant Secretary General, Office of External Relations under Secretary General Kofi Annan. Prior to that she served as Special Advisor for Public Policy. Lyman is the Ralph Bunche Senior Fellow and Director of Africa Policy Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University.
Several professors with regional expertise will discuss the prospects of bringing peace to troubled regions. Harry Chernotsky will discuss Latin America. He is a professor of Political Science and director of International Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The Middle East is Mustafa Abu-Sway's area of knowledge. He is associate professor and director of the Islamic Research Center in the College of Arts at Al-Quds University in Jerusalem. Jeffrey S. Morton is an associate professor of International Law and Politics in the Department of Political Science and director of the peace studies program at FAU. He will discuss the Balkans region.
