Art Historian Carol Damian to Lecture at FAU
on Peru School of Painting
BOCA RATON, FL (October 29, 2003) - Florida Atlantic University will welcome art historian Carol Damian, associate professor of art and chairperson in the Visual Arts Department at Florida International University, for a lecture entitled: "The Andean Goddess: Yesterday and Today." The lecture, which will take a look at women and art, will be presented Thursday, November 13 at 7 p.m. in Performing Arts 101, a lecture hall next to the Schmidt Center Gallery on Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Damian's lecture will draw from her book on the Cuzco, Peru school of painting entitled "The Virgin of the Andes: Art and Ritual in Colonial Cuzco." Damian is a specialist in Latin American and Caribbean Art and teaches classes in Pre-Columbian, Colonial, Spanish and Contemporary Latin American Art. Her most recent work has been with Latin American women and the Cuban exile artists for whom she has written numerous catalogs and articles.
The lecture complements an exhibition at FAU entitled "Corporal: Contemporary Latin American Women Artists," which runs Saturday October 25 through Saturday, January 24. This is an exhibition of 15 Latin American women artists in several media.
"The Andean Goddess: Yesterday and Today" is presented by FAU's Latin American Studies Certificate Program as part of "Voices and Images from Latin America," a series of public programs exhibitions and events that will take place throughout the 2003-2004 academic year.
