FAU's A.D. Henderson School Teaches Innovative Fishing & Boating Curriculum
BOCA RATON, FL (October 17, 2003) - Florida Atlantic University's A.D. Henderson School was one of thirty-four schools nationwide to receive a grant to incorporate fishing and boating into its physical education programs, part of a new program to promote these outdoor pastimes and foster healthy and active leisure lifestyles.
Launched earlier this year as an innovative teaching method to bring the fishing and boating experience to America's youth, the National Physical Education Grants Initiative sponsored grants by the Future Fisherman Foundation, Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, American Association for Leisure and Recreation and National Association for Sport and Physical Education. These partners advocate long-term mentoring and professional standards in the education programs they promote.
Michelle Sirounis, a teacher at A.D. Henderson, integrated fishing and boating into the school's curricula this school year. Sirounis learned about angling and boating skills, safety, ethics; equipment set-up and maintenance; fish and their habitat needs; how to take part in community conservation projects, and information on recruiting volunteers.
As part of the innovative curriculum, a six-week after school enrichment class was created to foster environmental and aquatic education. This program is due in part to the support of the Florida Bass Foundation, a program that teaches environmental stewardship, responsibility and empowers children to change their environment. Due to the strong support of the Foundation, Senator Ron Klein presented the group with a proclamation which proclaims October 25 as Florida Bass Foundation Day.
