Jane Goodall to Present Lecture on Chimpanzees, Conservation and the Environment at FAU

BOCA RATON, FL (October 8, 2003) - Dr. Jane Goodall, world-renowned primatologist and environmentalist, will be at Florida Atlantic University on Sunday, October 26 at 2 p.m. for a lecture and book signing. The lecture will take place in the University Center Auditorium on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. Individual tickets may be purchased for $20; FAU students, faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $15 with ID.

Jane Goodall began her landmark study of chimpanzees in Tanzania in June 1960 under the mentorship of anthropologist and paleontologist Dr. Louis Leakey. Her many years of research while living at the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve (Gombe National Park) laid the foundation for contemporary primatological research and redefined the relationship between humans and animals.

In 1977, Goodall established the Jane Goodall Institute, which continues the Gombe research and is a global leader in the effort to protect chimpanzees and their habitats. The Institute also is widely recognized for establishing innovative, community-centered conservation and development programs in Africa, and for establishing the Roots and Shoots education program. The goal of Roots and Shoots, which is housed in 70 countries, is to educate young people and engage them in service projects that benefit people, animals and the environment.

Goodall now travels an average 300 days year to visit school children and speak to various groups about the threats facing chimpanzees, other environmental crises, and her reasons for hope that humankind will ultimately solve the problems it has imposed on the earth. She continually urges her audiences to recognize their personal responsibility and ability to effect change through consumer action, lifestyle change and activism.

Goodall's scores of honors include the Medal of Tanzania, the National Geographic Society's Hubbard Medal, Japan's prestigious Kyoto Prize, Spain's Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research 2003, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science and the Gandhi/King Award for Nonviolence. In April 2002, Secretary-General Kofi Annan named Dr. Goodall a United Nations "Messenger of Peace" and in 2003, Queen Elizabeth II named Goodall a Dame of the British Empire, the equivalent of knighthood.

Goodall's publications include overviews of her work at Gombe; "In the Shadow of Man" and "Through a Window," as well as the autobiography "Reason for Hope" and many children's books. "The Chimpanzees of Gombe: Patterns of Behavior" is the definitive scientific work on chimpanzees and is the culmination of her scientific career. In addition to various publications, she has been the subject of numerous television documentaries and is featured in the IMAX film, "Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees."

The lecture is presented by the Jane Goodall Institute's ChimpanZoo Program, which is holding a conference in Boca Raton, October 25 - 29. The lecture is sponsored by the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts & Letters and the Department of Anthropology, with additional support from the Environmental Studies Program, the Peace Studies Program and the Ph.D. in Comparative Studies' Public Intellectuals Program.

Tickets are available by calling 561-297-3737 or at the auditorium two hours prior to the lecture. For more information about the lecture and conference, call FAU's Department of Anthropology at 561-297-2256. For more information on the Jane Goodall Institute, visit www.janegoodall.org.
