FAU's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters Announces
Administrative Appointments

BOCA RATON, FL (September 30, 2003) - As Florida Atlantic University grows to meet the needs of the South Florida community, William A. Covino, dean of FAU's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters announces a new position and several appointments.

Anthony Tamburri has been named the new associate dean for Research, Graduate and Interdisciplinary Programs for FAU's Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. In this newly created position, he will work with the faculty to develop further distinction in scholarly and creative accomplishment, build the college commitment to graduate education and develop a coordinated program of interdisciplinary studies. Interdisciplinary degrees offered in the College include comparative studies, liberal studies, women's studies, arts and humanities, Holocaust and Judaic studies and social sciences. Interdisciplinary certificate programs include Classical Studies, English as a Second Language (ESL), Environmental Studies, Ethnic Studies, Film and Video Studies, Holocaust and Judaic Studies, Latin American Studies, Peace Studies and Women's Studies.

Tamburri joined FAU in 2000 as chair of the Department of Languages and Linguistics. Before joining FAU, he was a professor of Italian studies and comparative literature at Purdue University.

Jeffrey S. Morton was named the new director of FAU's Peace Studies Program, which was established in 2000 to promote public dialogue, curricular initiatives and scholarly work on peace-related issues. Morton is an associate professor of political science at FAU and has been involved in the Peace Studies Program since its inception in 2000. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of South Carolina.

Myriam Ruthenberg is the new interim chair of the Department of Languages and Linguistics. She has been at FAU since 1990 in the Department of Languages and Linguistics, where she was most recently a professor of comparative literature.

Edward Schwerin is the new chair of the Department of Political Science. He has been at FAU since 1990. He received his M.A. and B.A. in political science from FAU and his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Hawaii.

Marina Paola Banchetti is the new interim chair of the Department of Philosophy. She has been at FAU since 1994 and has also taught at the Miami-Dade Community College, Florida A&M University and the University of Miami. She received her Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Miami.

Michael S. Harris is the new chair of the Department of Anthropology. He has been at FAU since 1993 and since 1997 has been the faculty supervisor for FAU's Archaeological and Ethnographic Field School in Ecuador. Every summer, Harris takes a group of students to Ecuador to train them in archaeological field and laboratory methods. Harris received his Ph.D. in anthropology from Southern Methodist University.
