FAU Celebrates "Parenting Grandparents' Day" To Honor Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
BOCA RATON, FL (September 9, 2003) - The number of grandparents raising their grandchildren in America has steadily increased over the years as more and more parents are forced to work outside the home. Particularly in low-income households where childcare costs are prohibitive, grandparents are assuming more of a nurturing, childrearing role. In an effort to recognize and celebrate the vital role of such grandparents in our community, Florida Atlantic University's Center for Urban Redevelopment and Empowerment (FAU-CURE), in partnership with the Palm Beach County Children's Services Council and the area agency on Aging of the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast, Inc., is hosting a "Parenting Grandparents' Day."
"Parenting Grandparents' Day" was designed to celebrate grandparents in our community who are raising their grandchildren. The day will include useful information on social programs, child welfare and child rearing support, as well as legal issues surrounding adoption. In addition, there will be music, games, face-painting, story-telling and other entertainment for children. Babysitters will also be on hand to assist with small children.
"Parenting Grandparents' Day" will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 16 from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the Boynton Beach Mall, Piccadilly's Banquet Room. The event is free and open to the public.
For more information on this event, contact Venesia Thompson at 954-762-5697 or email vthompson@fau.edu.
