FAU To Celebrate Summer Commencement
BOCA RATON, FL (July 30, 2003) - More than 1,500 students will receive their diplomas from Florida Atlantic University during the summer commencement ceremony on Friday, August 8 at 10 a.m. These students will join more than 82,000 alumni who have graduated from FAU since the University opened its doors nearly 40 years ago.
"Commencement is a proud moment for the university," said FAU President Frank T. Brogan, '81. "These students have worked hard to pursue their dreams, and it is an honor to celebrate this special day with them and their loved ones."
Presiding over FAU's commencement ceremony, Dr. Frederick Hoffman, FAU mathematics professor, Board of Trustees member and president of the Faculty Senate, will serve as the university marshal. He replaces Dr. Stephen Voss, who served as the university marshal for 31 graduation ceremonies. Voss retired after the spring commencement and was the first person in FAU history to hold this honor.
FAU's summer commencement ceremony will feature numerous outstanding students who have persevered to attain a degree. A couple of these students are:
" Menahem Hager, at the age of 82, is FAU's oldest graduate for summer commencement. Hager promised his wife, Ellen, who died over three years ago that he would complete his bachelor's degree. As a history major, he brought his life experiences to the classroom.
" Maurice Phillip De Young V is receiving his doctoral degree in chemical biology. He was the first student to participate in FAU's chemistry/biochemistry Ph.D. program. De Young has already made a name for himself in the field of cancer research, as part of an FAU team of researchers that has made significant scientific breakthroughs in both diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
Commencement for all of FAU's colleges will be held in FAU's gymnasium, 777 Glades Road. The ceremony will be cybercasted at www.fau.edu.
