FAU Names Athletics Director

BOCA RATON, FL (July 14, 2003) - Craig Angelos, deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer at Indiana University, has been named Florida Atlantic University's new athletics director, announced FAU President Frank Brogan, '81.

"This is a golden opportunity," said Brogan. "Craig brings a wealth of experience to FAU, which will help bring our dynamic program to national prominence."

Angelos, 41, will begin his new post at FAU in August. He will be responsible for the university's intercollegiate athletics program, which consists of 17 intercollegiate sports representing eight men's and nine women's sports. In addition, Angelos will be charged with ensuring compliance with the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) and Atlantic Sun Conference rules and regulations, promoting student-athlete success and providing leadership for external fundraising.

"I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that I will have as Florida Atlantic University's new athletics director," said Angelos. "I believe by working with President Brogan and the FAU students and staff, we can take this program to even greater heights."

A leader who has worked with two NCAA Division I-A powerhouses, Angelos' tenure at IU was preceded by several years as senior associate athletics director at the University of Miami. He has also served as a legislative assistant for the NCAA. A graduate from Creighton University in Nebraska with a juris doctorate, Angelos also worked as an attorney in California.

The selection of Angelos as FAU's fourth athletics director ends a two-month nationwide search that saw nearly 90 applicants for the position. A 13-member search committee made up of university staff, faculty, students, boosters and alumni narrowed the pool to five. The final candidates included Dean Billick, deputy director of athletics, University of Cincinnati; Thomas Collins, senior associate athletic director, Arizona State University; Timothy Fitzpatrick, chief operating officer/associate athletic director, U.S. Military Academy, West Point; Barbara Sparks-McGlinchy, senior associate athletics director, University of South Florida and Angelos.

A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Angelos graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brigham Young, where he was a starting first baseman on the varsity squad. Angelos later began a professional baseball career in Italy.

Angelos has been married to Kristin for 17 years and has six children.
