FAU Receives Grant for Workforce Development
BOCA RATON, FL (June 30, 2003) - The Florida Institute for Applied Research and Evaluation, part of Florida Atlantic University's College of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs, has been awarded $1.34 million annually for the next five years from the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation. The funding will be used to operate the One Stop workforce development center in Pompano. The agreement between FAU and WorkForce One, a renewable, single-year contract that can be renewed for four additional years, totals nearly $6.7 million.
"The real key to this, and what is very exciting, is that - for the first time - Florida Atlantic University and our various schools and colleges can help people directly with workforce training and job placement," said Dr. Phillip Rokicki, director of the Institute, which has been evaluating workforce development in Florida for nearly 10 years. "To my knowledge, it is the first such university/workforce development partnership in the country." The Institute was previously known as the Florida Institute for Career and Employment Training.
FAU will operate the One Stop center on the northwest corner of Sample and Powerline Roads in Pompano Beach. The center will offer employment-related services such as job opportunities, workshops, specialized assistance, skills training and technical support to unemployed, underemployed and welfare clients in northern Broward County. In addition, staff at the One-Stop can aid residents who are newly unemployed and need to file for unemployment benefits or those interested in making a career change.
"This project is further indication of FAU's efforts to work with employers to create a vibrant economic base in the counties we serve," said Dr. Larry F. Lemanski, vice president for Research and Graduate Studies.
