FAU HOSTS WALK FLORIDA BY BUS
JUPITER, FL (May 9, 2003) The Center for Urban Redevelopment and Empowerment (CURE) at Florida Atlantic University will host Walk Florida by Bus, a walking tour of Abacoa, West Palm Beach and Delray Beach, on Wednesday, May 14, 2003.
The program is specifically designed for development directors, city planners and others who need information on making their towns pedestrian friendly. The tour begins at the Boca Raton Campus and proceeds to Abacoa, home of FAUs John D. MacArthur Campus. Jupiter Mayor Karen Golonka will welcome tour participants, followed by a walking tour led by Dan Burden, founder of Walkable Communities. Ed Maietta, director of the Abacoa Partnership for Community will conduct a bus tour of the new town.
Nader Salour, president of Abacoa Development Company, and Marie York, director of the Catanese Center for Environmental and Urban Solutions at FAU - Jupiter, will address the group at the Jupiter Community Center.
After lunch in Abacoa, the tour group continues to West Palm Beachs City Place, where they will be greeted by Mayor Lois Frankel and former mayor Nancy Graham. A tour of downtown West Palm Beach follows.
The next stop of the bus tour will be Delray Beach. Mayor Jeff Perlman, Diane Colonna of the CRA, Glenn Weiss of Pineapple Grove and pedestrian advocate Jim Smith will introduce the Delray Project.
The tour concludes with the return trip to FAU in Boca Raton.
Walk Florida by Bus is presented through a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. Sponsors are the Center for Urban Redevelopment and Empowerment (CURE), the Florida Institute of Government at FAU and the Catanese Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions.
