FAU Recognized As Leader In Higher Education
BOCA RATON, FL (April 3, 2003) - Florida Atlantic University is tops in the state, according to Florida Leader, a regional magazine that ranks Florida's colleges and university for its "Best of" issue each year.
Boasting Florida's best marching band, best new major and the creation of the best new medical technology, FAU was recognized for its successes, improvements and achievements.
"FAU is honored by this recognition," said Emanuel Newsome, senior vice president of Student Affairs. "Our students are very proud of this university and this recognition highlights their hard work and dedication."
Florida Leader named FAU "Best of" in the following categories:
" Best Medical Technology: Students at FAU's College of Engineering created the CodeBlue web-based monitoring system, which permits medical patients with serious health problems to be monitored via the internet. The monitoring system records the patient's body temperature and heart rate. Then, it sends the information to a home personal computer that transmits the information to medical professionals. CodeBlue was honored as one of the top ten projects from university students around the world at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 2002 competition.
" Best New Major: The new commercial music studies program allows students to get hands-on experience with the creative and business aspects of the music industry. The creation of this major has allowed for FAU to create the first full-service record label of any university in the United States, HOOT Recordings.
" Best New Group: FAU is marching to a new beat. Last July, Director George Sparks created the University's first marching band. The Marching Owls is made up of 65 musicians and 20 color guard members, who perform at all football home games.
" Best Student Government: Unifying four Student Government organizations overseeing seven campuses across a 150 mile area is a daunting task, but FAU's SGA President Pablo E. Paez and Vice President Ancel Pratt, III have done that while making their relationship with the administration strong.
