FAU To Host Environmental Ethics Conference
Boca Raton, FL (April 17, 2003) - Florida Atlantic University will host the
second annual South Florida Environmental Ethics Conference on Friday, April 25 at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center, 265 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale.
This year's conference will focus on environmental issues and their effect on South Florida's population. Panelists will discuss a range of topics, including environmental ethics, environmental justice, and the impact Everglades restoration has on neighboring communities.
"Public policy questions raise value issues as well as economic impact and technical issues. Too often, these aspects are treated as distinct rather than as overlapping and mutually informing," said Dr. Robin Fiore, professor of philosophy at FAU. "The environmental ethics conference will provide South Floridians with an opportunity to learn about the abundant ethical opportunities and challenges in environmental public policy."
FAU will host a number of distinguished speakers at this year's symposium. The keynote speaker is Barry E. Hill, director of the Office of Environmental Justice of the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Currently, Hill works to ensure that communities comprised of minorities and/or low-income populations receive equal protection under environmental laws. During the conference, Hill will focus on the challenges and opportunities associated with guaranteeing justice for all communities while still preserving natural resources.
The full day conference is open to the public and will run from 8:30 a.m. until
3:30 p.m. Pre-registration for this event is suggested. You may register at www.miamidade.gov/ethics/env_conf.htm. Pre-registration cost is $30.
After April 22, the cost will increase to $40. For more information on the event,
