FAU PRESIDENT AND MRS. FRANK T. BROGAN TO HOST PRESIDENTIAL VIP RECEPTION FOR "ROMANCING THE CLASSICS" MUSIC FESTIVAL
Three-day music festival to feature more than 200 performers across three campuses
BOCA RATON, FL (March 12, 2003) -- Florida Atlantic University President and Mrs. Frank T. Brogan will host a Presidential VIP Reception to celebrate FAU's 2003 Music Festival "Romancing the Classics: Love of Music, Music of Love," Saturday, March 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Visual Arts Center Patio by the Lake on FAU's Boca Raton Campus. Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters Dean William A. Covino and his wife, Dr. Deborah Covino, will co-host the Presidential VIP Reception with President and Mrs. Brogan.
"Romancing the Classics," which runs Friday, March 21 - Sunday, March 23, will showcase FAU's finest student musicians, internationally acclaimed faculty and artists-in-residence. It will be held at FAU's Boca Raton campus, Jupiter campus, and in Ft. Lauderdale and Davie. Music lovers in Palm Beach and Broward counties will hear more than 200 musicians perform an eclectic array of musical styles and genres including jazz, choral, orchestral and chamber music throughout the festival weekend.
All Boca Raton events will take place at FAU's Boca Raton Campus, 777 Glades Road, in the Dorothy F. Schmidt Center for Performing Arts complex:
" Friday, March 21, 8 p.m., University Theater -- The Jazz Rats Big Band, ensemble-in- residence. Directed by Tim Walters, this 18-piece band is made up of some of the best and most noted jazz musicians in South Florida. The performance will feature sentimental and popular favorites of the Jazz era.
" Saturday, March 22, 6:30 p.m., Visual Arts Center Patio by the Lake - Presidential VIP Reception.
" Saturday, March 22, 8 p.m., University Theater -- FAU Chamber Singers and FAU Wind Ensemble. FAU Chamber Singers, conducted by Patricia P. Fleitas, performing Brahms' "Liebeslieder Waltzes" and the FAU Wind Ensemble, conducted by George Sparks, performing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #2 with Heather Coltman on piano and "Vocalise" with Brian Neal on trumpet.
" Sunday, March 23, 3 p.m., University Theater -- Trio Amadé, ensemble-in-residence; FAU Klezmer Ensemble; and FAU Symphony Orchestra and Duo Turgeon, ensemble-in-residence. Trio Amadé members Heather Coltman, piano; Felicia Moye, violin; and Emilio Colón, cello, will perform Piazzolla's sensual "Four Seasons." Conductor Aaron Kula will lead the Klezmer Ensemble as well as the Symphony Orchestra. Pianists Edward and Anne-Louise Turgeon will join the symphony for Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos. A festival wrap party will follow this concert at Brasserie Mon Ami restaurant in Boca Raton.
Broward events will take place in Fort Lauderdale and Davie.

" Friday, March 21, 8 p.m., Amaturo Theatre -- FAU Chamber Singers and FAU Wind Ensemble. The FAU Chamber Singers will perform Brahms' "Liebeslieder Waltzes" and the Wind Ensemble will feature Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto #2 and "Vocalise" for trumpet. Once again, Fleitas and Sparks will lead the singers and ensemble in these performances. Coltman and Neal will join the ensemble on piano and trumpet.
" Saturday, March 22, 2 p.m., Liberal Arts Auditorium, FAU Davie Campus, 2912 College Avenue, Davie -- FAU Chamber Soloists, artists-in-residence. Pianist Judith Burganger will join Miami String Quartet members Cathy Meng Robinson, violin, and Keith Robinson cello, in the premier of Adolphe von Henselt's "Piano Trio in A minor, Op.
24."
" Sunday, March 23, 3 p.m., Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale Auditorium, 1 East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale -- FAU Hoot Jazz Combo. This band features up-and-coming stars from the jazz program at FAU.
All Jupiter events will be held at FAU's John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside Drive.
" Friday, March 21, 8 p.m., Auditorium -- Piano and vocalists. Pianist Irena Kofman will accompany vocalists Eric Thomas and Kristen DiNonno in their presentation "Voices of Love."
" Saturday, March 22, 3 p.m., Auditorium -- Trio Amadé, ensemble-in-residence, and Grenadilla Woodwind Quintet. Trio Amadé will perform Piazzolla's "Four Seasons" and the Woodwind Quintet with Elissa Lakofsky, flute; Jennifer Pototchnic, oboe; Paul Green, clarinet; Michael DiGregorio, bassoon; and Myrna Meeroff, horn, will perform French romantic music. A woodwind trio and tuba/euphonium quartet will also perform during this concert.
" Sunday, March 23, 3 p.m., Auditorium -- FAU Women's Chorus, Vocal Soloists, Brass & Woodwind Chamber Ensembles. Lead by Stacie Lee Rossow, the chorus will perform light-hearted love songs while the soloists will sing art songs of the 19th century.
" Sunday, March 23, 4 p.m., Library Atrium -- VIP Reception.
