Animation Experts To Speak At FAU

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (March 25, 2003) - Two of the film industry’s top computer animators will conduct a seminar presented by Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Electronic Communication on Saturday, April 5 from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, 1 East Las Olas Boulevard.

Hosted by the Museum of Art, Wayne Gilbert and Ron Bublitz, computer graphics artists with Industrial Light + Magic, who both worked on the animation of Star Wars: Attack of The Clones, will present topics on classical animation fundamentals and their applications to computer generated character animation.

Gilbert is a senior lead animator with ILM and during the past six years has worked on features films such as E.T. (re-release), The Mummy Returns, the PlayStation2 game Star Wars: Bounty Hunter in addition to his work on Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. As an independent film maker he is completing a second computer-generated short film. During FAU’s seminar, Gilbert will focus on character animation principles from paper to computer. His new independent film, Let Go, will also be screened and used as part of the seminar. An author and educator, Gilbert authored "Simplified Drawing For Planning Animation," which is based on curriculum developed while teaching in the classical animation program at Sheridan College.

Bublitz is a technical director with the ILM Creature Development Department. In addition to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, Bublitz has worked on Star Wars: Bounty Hunter and the upcoming Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. His presentation will focus on character rigging for animation.

In addition to the discussions by two of industry leaders, computer demonstrations will take place using a character designed and rigged specifically for teaching character animation.

The day-long seminar is free to FAU student, faculty and staff. Registration fees for all other students, educators and ACM SIGGRAPH and IGDA members are $10 with current ID. Fees for the general public are $25.
