Christopher Hitchens To Present Lecture Series At FAU

BOCA RATON, FL (Feb. 10, 2003) -- Nationally known columnist, literary critic and social commentator Christopher Hitchens will give a series of public lectures at Florida Atlantic University throughout the month of February.
Hitchens, who writes for Vanity Fair and is the book critic for Newsday, will speak at several FAU locations on a variety of topics including:
· Legacy of Empire: From Britain to America will take place Monday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. in the University Theater on FAUs Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
A cocktail reception will precede the lecture at 6 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public. The lecture will be repeated on Monday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in the Harriet Theater at CityPlace, 222 Lakeview Avenue in West Palm Beach. This presentation is also free and open to the public and sponsored by the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, which has named Hitchens as its 2003 Palm Beach Author Laureate.
· Writer as Opposition/Literature as Dissent will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at the MacArthur Auditorium on FAUs MacArthur campus at 5353 Parkside Drive in Jupiter. There will be a $20 charge for this presentation. The presentation will also be repeated on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Boca Raton campus in the Live Oak Pavilion on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
This presentation is free and open to the public.
· The Relevance of George Orwell in the 21st Century will take place Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Building of the Boca Raton campus in Room 101, 777 Glades Road. The presentation is free and open to the public.
Hitchens, who calls himself an essayist and a contrarian, has written several books including: Letters to a Young Contrarian, Why Orwell Matters, and The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice.
Hitchens also appears on numerous television programs including Hardball with Chris Matthews and CSPANs Washington Journal. Hitchens is a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Pittsburgh; and the New School of Social Research, in New York City.
The Christopher Hitchens lecture series is made possible by a grant from the Lawrence Sanders Foundation. The series is sponsored by the Palm Beach County Cultural Council, the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, The Ph.D. Program in Comparative Studies, and the Department of Languages and Linguistics.
