FAU and Stand Among Friends To Create The Center For The Study Of Neurological Disabilities
BOCA RATON, FL (Jan. 16, 2003) -- Florida Atlantic University announced today a $500,000 gift to establish The Center for the Study of Neurological Disabilities, a new state-of-the-art resource center on FAU's Boca Raton campus.
Shawn Friedkin, president of Stand Among Friends, an organization dedicated to support research, education, and advocacy of neurological related disabilities, presented the gift to FAU.
"We are proud to have FAU as our partner," said Friedkin. "I am excited about working with the different Colleges at FAU to develop and deliver information, products and services that will vastly improve the quality of life for all those associated with a neurological disorder."
The Center will be housed in a planned $16 million College of Nursing building funded through a donation from Boca Raton philanthropist Christine E. Lynn. Its mission will be to improve the day-to-day lives of people living with neurological disabilities, while serving as a resource for the latest information on neurological issues for students, researchers and those living with or caring for someone with neurological disabilities. In addition, the Center will seek to support multi-disciplinary research aimed at better understanding the challenges faced by people with neurological disabilities and will provide a coordinated response to legislative and government initiatives that impact the lives of those with neurological disabilities.
"This new Center will serve as an important resource for countless members of the community, and the College is excited about the possibilities for interdisciplinary research," said Anne Boykin, dean of FAU's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. "It will be a pleasure working with Mr. Friedkin and Stand Among Friends to make this a top-notch Center."
