FAU STUDENTS WIN ADVERTISING COMPETITION
Real World Competition Proves Invaluable
BOCA RATON, FL (Jan. 13, 2003) - In an effort to give its students the real-world experience necessary to excel in today's business world, Florida Atlantic University's College of Business and flatfeerealty.us, a web-based real estate company, organized an advertising competition for advertising students.
Fanny Fay Chira, a senior, won the competition, taking home the grand prize of $1,000 and an A for the final examination. Patricia Pererya, a junior, was voted runner-up.
Jim Weldon, the owner of flatfeerealty, brought the idea for the competition to Allen Smith, organizer of the competition and a professor of advertising at FAU. "Students benefit greatly from the experience of working with a real business. The contest created a high energy environment," said Smith.
The competition required students to create a storyboard depicting a thirty-second commercial that would be cost effective to produce and that would increase awareness of flatfeerealty.us. "Chira's project best captured the creative message strategy that flatfeerealty.us managers believed would influence their buyers," said Weldon. Students submitted thirteen storyboards.
"Winning the contest confirms my desire for an advertising career," said Chira. "It was a challenging project and that made winning even more special."
FAU's College of Business has worked with outside companies in the past to bring corporate world experiences into the classroom. Companies that are interested in offering contests or projects to marketing undergraduate or graduate students should contact Eric Shaw at shaw@fau.edu or 561-297-3036.
