FAU Board of Trustees Members Named
BOCA RATON, FL (Jan. 10, 2003) - The appointees of Florida Atlantic University's Board of Trustees were named in Tallahassee by the newly created Florida Board of Governors and Governor Jeb Bush.
Under the constitutional amendment approved by voters in November, the newly created Florida Board of Governors appoints five members of each state university 13-member board of trustees, and the governor makes six appointments. The remaining two members are faculty and student representatives.
"It is our belief that most decisions are best made at the local level, by the local boards of trustees, which have the greatest knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs and mission of each institution," said Thomas F. Petway, chairman of the Board of Governors. "This resolution is a strong statement of the Board of Governors' commitment to local control."
FAU's local board remained largely unchanged, however, former FAU Board of Trustees Chairman John Temple was appointed to the Board of Governors.
The new Board of Trustees is now made up of the following community and university leaders:
· Scott Adams - president and co-founder of Cenetec, LLC. An FAU alumnus, he is a founding member of the FAU Football program and a member of the FAU Foundation Board of Directors.
· Nancy Blosser - member of FAU's College of Nursing Advisory Board and a registered nurse
· William Bryant - dentist and owner of an orthodontics and TMJ/cranio-facial orthopedics practice
· Jorge Dominicis - vice president of Florida Crystals Corporation
· E. Llwyd Ecclestone - president of Ecclestone Organization
· Gerri McPherson - principal of Lincoln Park Academy, a magnet elementary school. She is an FAU College of Education alumna.
· Virginia Miller - director of community relations for Miller Construction Company. She is a member of FAU's Broward Community Advisory Board
· Sherry Plymale - past chair of the State Board of Community Colleges and chief of staff of the former Florida Education Commissioner
· Norman Tripp - founder, chairman emeritus and partner in the Tripp Scott Law Firm in Fort Lauderdale and former chair of the State Board of Community Colleges
· Bruce Warshal - publisher of the Jewish Journal
· George Zoley - vice chairman and CEO of Wackenhut Corrections Corporation and a member of FAU's Foundation Board of Directors. He earned his bachelor's degree from FAU in political science and his master's degree from FAU in public administration. Zoley is also chairing the FAU Presidential Search Committee.
Frederick Hoffman, FAU professor of mathematics and chair of the FAU
Faculty Senate, and Pablo Paez, president of FAU's student body, will serve as the faculty and student representatives, respectively.
The new chair of the FAU Board of Trustees will be elected during the next
Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. in the Live Oak Pavilion on FAU's Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton.
