FAU’s Lifelong Learning Society at Jupiter Celebrates 10 Years with Performing Arts Week

JUPITER, FL (December 19, 2007) -  The Lifelong Learning Society at Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus will celebrate its 10th anniversary, “The Year of the Student and Faculty,” during its 2008 Performing Arts Week, scheduled for January 7 - 12.  Commencing in 1997 with 120 students, the Lifelong Learning Society has grown to more than 5,000 members with over 15,000 class registrations last year by offering exciting liberal arts classes and special one-time events.

The 2008 Performing Arts Week will consist of a variety of performances and lectures.  Beginning on Monday, January 7, 2008 at 10 a.m., Virginia Newmyer, a noted lecturer on the topics of British social history and literature at the Smithsonian Institution and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at American University in Washington, will guide the audience into the world of “Jane Austen Goes to the Movies” as she explores the dramatizations of Jane Austen’s novels.  Duo Marlene and Chet Solender will conduct a lecture and performance, “Rodgers and Hart to Rodgers and Hammerstein,” at 7 p.m.  Their lecture will review the music of Richard Rodgers and his relationships with lyricists Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein.

Pianist Joe Scott will present a concert featuring his eight-piece jazz ensemble on Tuesday, January 8 at 2 p.m.

On Wednesday, January 9 at 11 a.m., Kit Stewart will perform her renowned concert series “A Salute to the Greatest Songbirds.”  This concert features songs from some of the great female vocalists of our time, including Billie Holiday, Rosemary Clooney, Patsy Cline and Karen Carpenter.  At 7 p.m., Robert Milne, an accomplished French horn virtuoso and pianist, will perform a variety of Ragtime classics in “From Chopin to Boogie Woogie.”

Myrna Goldberger, an educational entertainer, will present her one–act play, “The Vanderbilt Vignettes,” on Thursday, January 10 at 11 a.m. The play focuses on three Vanderbilt women: Alva, Consuelo and Gloria.  At 3:30 p.m., Robert Edsel, author of Rescuing Da Vinci and executive producer of the documentary film, The Rape of Europa, will speak about the “Monuments Men” and their heroic exploits during World War II while rescuing and safeguarding many of the world’s greatest artworks.

On Friday, January 11 at 1:30 p.m., “India and China: Asia’s Emerging Giants” will be the topic of a symposium conducted by Dr. Elliot L. Tepper of the Asian Studies Department at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada; Ambassador Karl Inderfurth; and acclaimed author and Asian affairs consultant Bonnie S. Glaser.

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s 2006 and 2007 “Palm Beach Idols” winners and the Maltz Youth Traveling Group will close out the week with a performance held on Saturday, January 12 at 1:30 p.m. featuring today’s top hits and Broadway favorites.

All events take place in the Lifelong Learning Society complex, located on FAU’s Jupiter campus.  For more information, to purchase tickets for the 2008 Performing Arts Week or to receive a free 2008 Winter Catalog, contact the Lifelong Learning Society at 561-799-8667 or 561-799-8547.
