JUPITER, FL (December 13, 2007) – For the third year, Florida Atlantic University’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College will host the Honors Summer Institute at the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter. The three-week program, a supervised residential college experience, will bring together high-achieving prospective 10th and 11th grade students to study with the faculty of the Honors College.
Due to the past success of the program, the Wilkes Honors College will be offering two academic programs in 2008: the Honors Summer Institute in Forensic Science and the Honors Summer Institute in Creativity. Students will take one of four honors courses and receive three college credits.
In the Honors Summer Institute in Forensic Science, offered in collaboration with Scripps Florida, students will have their choice between two courses:
- Investigating the Chemistry of Medicinal and Natural Products, for students with an interest in chemistry.
- Investigating the Mind Behind the Crime, for students with an interest in biology or psychology.
Similarly, the brand new Honors Summer Institute in Creativity, offered in collaboration with the Center for Creative Education, will have two courses from which students will choose:
- Science, Alchemy, and Magic in the Age of Shakespeare, for students with an interest in drama or literature.
- Art and Digital Imagery, for students with an interest in multimedia.
Along with their coursework, students will have several “hands-on” experiences each week related to their course work, including field trips, lectures, symposia and workshops to enhance their academic experience. There will also be an array of supervised social and recreational events.
For the first time, the Honors Summer Institute will offer a limited number of need-based scholarships. The scholarship amounts vary depending on the applicant’s level of need.
Application materials for the program are available online at www.fau.edu/summerinstitute. Cost of the program is $1,950, which includes a private bedroom in the Honors College residence halls, full meal plan and all activities. Florida students who do not qualify for dual enrollment will also pay a tuition fee of $333; tuition for out-of-state students is an additional $1,640. The application deadline is Sunday, March 30, 2008.
