BOCA RATON, FL (December 7, 2007) – Florida Atlantic University broke ground on its new recreation and fitness center that is set to open in January 2009. The center, on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, will be a state-of-the-art, $11 million recreation facility where students, faculty, staff, and alumni can meet, relax, workout and be engaged in FAU campus life.
“This remarkable facility will enhance the sense of tradition, pride and student life at Florida Atlantic University,” said FAU President Frank T. Brogan. “It is another significant step in the growth of this fine university.”
FAU student leaders began the project initiative in Spring 2004 by earmarking Capital Improvement Trust Funds to build the facility. Facility features will include a 6,600-square-foot fitness center with more than 40 pieces of cardio equipment, two circuit training units, a free weight area, stretching area, and two fitness performance rooms designed for yoga, pilates, aerobics and spinning. It also will have a multipurpose gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, badminton and special events, as well as men’s and women’s health club style locker rooms.
“FAU students and the entire FAU community will heavily utilize the new venue, providing equipment and facilities competitive with other colleges and universities around the country,” said Eric Hawkes, director of FAU campus recreation. “It will serve as a community hub, while providing new and improved space for fitness and recreation.”
The architects for the project are Borelli + Partners, Inc. from Miami, and the construction manager is Kaufman Lynn General Contractors, Inc. For more information, contact Eric Hawkes at 561-297-4512 or ehawkes@fau.edu.
