BOCA RATON, FL (December 11, 2007) – The May Smith Lecture Series on Post-Holocaust Christian Jewish Dialogue and The Raddock Family Eminent Scholar Chair in Holocaust Studies in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University will sponsor Paula Fredriksen of Boston University with the lecture “Social Origins of Christian Anti-Judaism.” The lecture will take place on Thursday, January 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Live Oak Pavilion of FAU’s University Center on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The lecture is free and no reservations are required.
Fredriksen is the William Goodwin Aurelio Professor of the Appreciation of Scripture at Boston University. She received her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College, a degree in theology at Oxford University and her Ph.D. at Princeton University. Fredriksen previously taught at Stanford, University of California Berkeley, and the University of Pittsburgh, and she is the Lady Davis Visiting Professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Fredriksen specializes in the social and intellectual history of ancient Christianity, from the Late Second Temple period to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Besides her books on Augustine (Augustine on Romans, 1982) and on Jesus and Christian tradition (From Jesus to Christ. The Origins of the New Testament Images of Jesus, 1988), she has written extensively on conversion, apocalypticism, Paul and his interpreters, and Jewish/Gentile relations in Late Antiquity. In 1999, she received a national Jewish Book Award for her most recent publication, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
