Ira J. Gelb Appointed Assistant Dean for Pre-Baccalaureate Programs in FAU’s College of Biomedical Science

BOCA RATON, FL (December 12, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science has appointed Dr. Ira J. Gelb, M.D. to the post of assistant dean for pre-baccalaureate programs. In his new voluntary position, Gelb will be responsible for expanding pre-professional courses offered by the College of Biomedical Science and coordinating other programs within the college with those currently being offered by FAU.  In addition, Gelb will be responsible for developing a community outreach program for middle schools, high schools and community colleges in the FAU service district. 

After retiring and relocating to Florida in the mid-1990s, Gelb has focused his work on expanding medical education in South Florida.  Gelb currently serves as a professor of clinical biomedical science and founding clinical coordinator of the biomedical program.  He has been on the FAU Foundation Board of Directors since 1997.  In other academic positions, Gelb is adjunct professor of medicine at the Weill College of Medicine at Cornell University, adjunct clinical professor of medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, voluntary professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and director of the patient simulator program in the FAU biomedical program.           

            Gelb is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the College of Chest Physicians and the American College of Cardiology.  In addition, he is chairman of the Leadership Council of the Boca Raton Chapter of the American Heart Association, serves on the Leadership Council of the Cleveland Clinic in Florida and is a member of the Boca Raton Community Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees.
