FAU Presents Latin American Music Festival

BOCA RATON, FL (November 20, 2006) – There will be something for every Latin American music lover at Florida Atlantic University’s Latin American Music Festival, which will take place December 2 through December 16 at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale at 1 East Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale and at the University Theatre on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The festival is presented by FAU’s department of music in the School of the Arts in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

The first event will be a piano concert with Duo Turgeon, the husband-and-wife team Anne Louise-Turgeon and Edward Turgeon, on Saturday, December 2 at 7 p.m. in the Horvitz Auditorium at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale.  The Duo have been delighting audiences for more than 10 years and have been critically acclaimed as one of the top piano duos of our time.  They will play music from their recording “Latin American Journey,” which includes works by some of the most beloved Latin-American composers.

FAU’s Jazz Rats Big Band will present the next concert on Sunday, December 3 at 3 p.m., also in the Horvitz. The Jazz Rats will explore the world of Latin Jazz, including Salsa, Samba, Bossa Nova and Flamenco.  They will perform music written by some of South Florida’s and the world’s best composers, including “Mambo Caliente,” from the movie Mambo Kings and “Maids of Cadiz” from Miles Davis’ Miles Ahead.

Then on Saturday, December 16 at 3 p.m., Cuarteto Latinoamericano and Heather Coltman, chair of FAU’s department of music, will present a variety of pieces by del Aguila and Beach for string quartet and piano at FAU’s University Theatre.  The award-winning Cuarteto consists of the three Britran brothers (Saul, Aron and Alvaro) along with Javier Montiel.  Originating from Mexico, the group has been nominated for a Grammy award and for a Latin Grammy.  They are known worldwide as the leading proponent of Latin American music for string quartet.  Coltman has performed extensively as a solo and collaborative pianist throughout the United States, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, South Africa and Greece.  Among the many competitions in which she has received top awards are the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition and the Geza Anda International Piano Competition. In addition, Coltman won the Outstanding Accompanist Award in both the Corpus Christi Young Artists Competition and the Emanuel Feurmann International Cello Competition.

Tickets for the events at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale are $25 - $30 and may be obtained by emailing education1@moafl.org or calling 954-525-5500, extension 336.  Tickets for the event on FAU’s campus are $20 and are available at the door prior to the concert.   For further information about the concerts, call 561-297-2977 or visit www.fau.edu/music.
