FAU Frontiers in Science Presents 'Repair of Coral Reefs Following Large Vessel Groundings'

BOCA RATON, FL (November 7, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science presents Rick Spadoni, Sr. as a guest speaker in the next public lecture of the Fall 2006 Frontiers in Science program.  The lecture will take place on Thursday, November 9 at 3:30 p.m. in Room 126 in the Charles E. Schmidt Biomedical Science Center.  Spadoni is vice president and a founding partner of Coastal Planning and Engineering of Boca Raton.  He is a graduate of FAU with degrees in biology and ocean engineering.

In his presentation, Spadoni will present three different scenarios of reef damage and reef repairs.  In each case, the damage occurred by ships running aground on the reefs. One of the repairs was featured in a Discovery Channel segment.  He will be drawing from his experiences as project manager for the National Marine Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Sanctuary Program, where he worked on reef repairs in the Florida Keys and off the west coast of Puerto Rico.  Spadoni will also lecture on his experience in numerous beach nourishment projects in the eastern United States, including local projects in Broward County, Boca Raton, Delray Beach and the Town of Palm Beach.

This program is the third in the fall series of the Frontiers in Science public lectures, and is free and open to the public.  It is sponsored by the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, and supported by FAU’s Lifelong Learning Society Endowed Professorship.
