FAU College of Engineering and Computer Science Names Wu a Distinguished Research Professor

BOCA RATON, FL (November 1, 2006) -  Dr. Jie Wu, Florida Atlantic University professor of computer science and  engineering and preeminent authority in the fields of wireless networks, sensor networks and parallel processing, has been named “Distinguished Research Professor” in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.  In previous years, Wu has been honored as “Researcher of the Year” at the professor level and “Researcher of the Year” at the associate professor level.

“As a graduate of our college, we are very proud of Dr. Wu and his many accomplishments,” said Dr. Karl S. Stevens, dean of FAU’s college of engineering and computer science. “His designation as “Distinguished Research Professor” is in recognition of his demonstrated leadership in the development and conduct of high quality research programs that advance the state-of-the-art in his discipline, outstanding success in obtaining competitive funding to support his research and to develop laboratory facilities, and his commitment to excellence in graduate education and supervision of master’s and doctoral students.”

This year, Wu was also awarded the “Outstanding Overseas Young Researcher Award” by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. This is an international competition that honors ten awardees per year in the IT field.  Wu was selected for his work in computers.

Wu currently serves as the chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Technical Committee on Distributed Processing that has a membership of 5,000 worldwide, co-chair of the 3rd IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad Hoc and Sensor Systems (MASS’06), and vice chair for the 21st IEEE International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS’07).

Wu was an IEEE Distinguished Visitor (1999-2001) and served as an associate editor for “IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems.” He gave keynote speeches at several international conferences and delivered over 100 invited seminars at universities/institutions worldwide.

Wu received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to purchase SGI and IBM supercomputers to do multidisciplinary research through the proposed Center for High Performance Computing. A second grant from the NSF was used to purchase equipment for sensor networks. As the principal investigator, Wu is working on several NSF research grants for wireless networks and mobile computing. Wu also collaborated with Motorola on sensor networking studies and with IBM on software/hardware testing.

Wu has authored two books and over 350 papers in leading journals and conference proceedings. He holds a Ph.D. in computer engineering from FAU, and joined the FAU faculty in 1989 after teaching at the Shanghai University of Science and Technology in China.
