FAU Embarks on ‘Mission Green’ Campaign

President Joins Climate Commitment Effort

BOCA RATON, FL (October 24, 2007) – Florida Atlantic University is embarking on a new initiative titled “Mission Green,” an effort to promote sustainability through education, operations and community engagement.

In the summer of 2007, FAU President Frank T. Brogan accepted an invitation to develop an action plan directing FAU toward climate neutrality by signing the American College University Presidents Climate Commitment. With the University Faculty Senate’s encouragement, Brogan joined the commitment, demonstrating FAU’s resolve in addressing climate change.

The Presidents Climate Commitment is an organization of American College and University presidents who have committed to taking action at their universities to address global warming, such as recycling water and waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by adopting alternative fuel vehicles, retrofitting old buildings and constructing new buildings with more efficient materials, using renewable sources of energy and energy saving plans, and making the campus walkable and bikeable.

“Florida Atlantic University, as well as other colleges and universities, are in a unique position to serve as role models by taking the initiative to becoming better stewards of our environment,” said Brogan.  “We need to begin this effort today in order to provide for a better tomorrow.”

As part of this commitment, the president formally established a sustainability working committee, comprised of students, faculty and staff, to address issues related to FAU’s global environmental footprint.  The multi-faceted “Mission Green” campaign represents the committee’s continuing work.

As part of “Mission Green,” on Campus Sustainability Day, Wednesday, October 24, FAU campuses will take part in a sustainability dialogue that will include presentations, displays, posters and a national webcast all aimed at creating a sustainable future for FAU’s campus community and the world.
