BOCA RATON, FL (October 19, 2006) – The department of visual arts and art history, located in Florida Atlantic University’s School of the Arts, is hosting two prominent New York art critics as Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Chairs in the Arts this fall. Both critics will give free public lectures on contemporary art. Roberta Smith, art critic for “The New York Times,” will lecture on Wednesday, October 25 at 7 p.m., and Jerry Saltz, senior art critic for “The Village Voice,” will lecture on Thursday, November 2 at 7 p.m. Both lectures will take place in the University Theatre on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
Smith has been writing for the “Times” since 1986. She has also written for “Art in America,” “Artforum” and “Arts Magazine.” In 2003, Smith was honored with the prestigious College Art Association’s Frank Jewell Mather Award for Art Criticism. She is one of the most influential art critics in the art world.
Saltz is an equally important and influential critic of the arts scene. He has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in criticism five times and is a finalist again this year. Saltz was the sole Advisor for the 1995 Whitney Biannual, and is currently also a Visiting Critic at Columbia University and Yale University. In addition to the “Village Voice,” he has written for “Artnet,” “Art in America,” “Parkett” and “Frieze.” Saltz is known for his lively and no-nonsense writing, and his reviews are highly prized by both artists and institutions.
