BOCA RATON, FL (September 27, 2006) – The department of music in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents the United States Marine Band in a free concert on Saturday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium at the University Center on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
Established in 1798, the United States Marine Band is America’s oldest professional musical organization. The band has performed at the inauguration of every president since Thomas Jefferson and plays at all important State events at the White House and in Washington D.C. In 1891, the band’s legendary 17th director, John Philip Sousa, led the Marine Band on its first concert tour. Since then, they have performed around the country on a set schedule, coming to the Southeastern states every five years.
The “Washington Post” called the band “not only the best in the land, but, very likely, the best in the world,” and the “Cleveland Plain Dealer” said that the band’s “musical texture is sometimes so sheer as to be transparent.”
“We are very lucky to be able to host such a prestigious organization,” said Kyle Prescott, assistant professor in the department of music and director of University Bands. “Our students will have a chance to not only see but also work with some very talented musicians.”
Tickets may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a request for tickets (limit four) to University Bands/Department of Music, 777 Glades Road, AH 119, Boca Raton, Florida 33431. Letters must be received by October 13 to ensure timely delivery. Groups of 10 or more may also request tickets by calling 561-297-3854.
Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Ticket holders must be seated by 7:15 p.m. If additional seats are still available at that time, non-ticket holders will be admitted.
