BOCA RATON, FL (September 12, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University’s department of theatre will present “A Bright Room Called Day,” a play by Tony Kushner, author of “Angels in America,” from Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 8. Shows begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and 2 p.m. on Sundays in the Studio One Theatre of FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.
The play centers around a group of young Bohemians living in Berlin at the time of the fall of the Weimar Republic and the rise in power of the Nazi party. These artists and film-industry workers gather to talk about changes in Germany at the apartment of Agnes, a film actress. The conversation centers on how each in the room feels that their lives will be affected in the coming months, and they wonder if they will be able to stay in a changed Berlin.
The play has an interesting twist in that it is told through a narrator named Zillah who introduces herself as a Jewish woman living in the United States in the early 80s. Zillah compares the situation in Nazi Germany to the rise of the right wing in the United States under Ronald Reagan.
“By including Zillan, Kushner presents a sort of fantasy journey,” said Jean-Louis Baldet, director and professor of theatre at FAU. “It is a fantasy journey to the dark side of political power.”
General admission tickets are $20. FAU faculty, staff and alumni tickets are $10, and students may obtain tickets free at the door or ahead of time with a $5 reservation fee. Tickets and student reservations can be purchased by calling 800-564-9539 or at the theatre two hours prior to the performance.
This production is presented by the School of the Arts’ department of theatre in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at FAU. For more information on other School of the Arts events, visit www.fau.edu/artsupdate.
