BOCA RATON, FL (September 8, 2006) - Florida Atlantic University Libraries is holding auditions for its Judaica Choral Society (JCS), a semi-professional community Jewish music chorus, through October 12 at the S.E. Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus.
Singers of all denominations are invited to audition for the 16-20-member advanced level ensemble. Knowledge of music is required. Auditions are by appointment and will require singing a prepared piece, sight singing a short passage and identification of musical notation.
The JCS, now in its third year, is the only known Jewish music chorus in residence at a state university in the United States. Its mission is to rehearse and perform choral music from the Libraries’ Judaica Music Collection. The JCS is under the direction of Aaron Kula, director of Music Collections at FAU Libraries and faculty member at New England Conservatory of Music.
Rehearsals will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, beginning October 26, on the fifth floor of the library. The chorus will work with guest artists and perform with the renowned Klezmer Company Orchestra, the Libraries’ professional ensemble in residence. The JCS repertoire will include Yiddish theatre, folk songs from Ladino, Eastern European and Mediterranean cultures and cantorial music, all sung in various languages.
Performance dates are Sunday, December 17, 2006 at the Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach; Sunday, January 28, 2007, at the Eissey Campus Theatre in Palm Beach Gardens, and Sunday, March 4, 2007, at FAU’s Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium in Boca Raton.
