BOCA RATON, FL (September 6, 2006) – Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 14 through October 18, 2006 on all of FAU’s campuses. Hispanic Heritage Month serves as a time to remember the contributions of Hispanic Americans and learn about the cultures from which they come. Events will include (arranged by date) – - Rainbow on Campus: Diversity Fair - A colorful celebration of diversity with an emphasis on diversity awareness, advocacy, and resources for the FAU community. - A Nation of Immigrants: Perceptions and Realities of the New Immigration Era – A panel discussion that will cover new laws that will affect immigrants, especially the Hispanic communities in South Florida. - What it Means to be Hispanic - This group discussion is designed to provide a safe environment for students to discuss the advantages and challenges of being a Hispanic college student. - Where Passion Prevails: Flamenco Dance - Share the love, beauty and sound of Flamenco and experience the intense and passionate nature of the Mediterranean people. - “Tortilla Soup”: Movie & Discussion - What happens when family ties intertwine with realities of personal aspirations, sorrows and feelings of happiness? October’s events and activities will include: - The Guatemalan Project - The Guatemalan Project is a grass root movement devoted to social justice. Learn how a group of people devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1999 got together and grew into a viable and thriving community. - “The Sea Inside”: Hispanic Movie Night – “The Sea Inside” won both Academy and Oscar awards for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year. This film is in Spanish with English subtitles. - Building Hopes & Homes: Volunteer Project to Build a Home - Volunteer your time and build a home for a needy family on October 7. - Parade of Colors: Hispanic Heritage Month Opening Ceremony – A parade of Hispanic flags, food and entertainment. Sign up to carry a flag. - Nepantla: Between Two Worlds, by Olga Loya - Mexican? American? Chicana? Latina? Telling a personal story, Olga Loya explores that place "in between" where we are trying to figure out who and where we are in this world.
