FAU Hosts September 11 Commemorative Events

            BOCA RATON, FL (September 1, 2006) – In observance of the tragedies that occurred on September 11, 2001, Florida Atlantic University will host a number of events for the university and general community, including -

September 11 – 13

What: 9/11 Film Series from the FAU Libraries’ Collection

Location:  The FAU Wimberly Library Media Center, Room 214, Boca Raton Campus

Description:  FAU Libraries’ Outreach Committee will host a 9/11 film series on freedom of speech, democracy and citizenship. There will be 3 different films shown on 3 different dates.  The 3 films include -

·        “Watch what you say” - ABC News anchor Ted Koppel and correspondent John Donovan explore the penalties of political dissent in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. This film includes news footage and a round table discussion with media personalities, journalists and others who have suffered the consequences of voicing unpopular opinions. It will reveal a disturbing intolerance for such comments during a period of national crisis. This film will be shown Monday, September 11 at noon.  Approximate length: 45 mins.

·        “La Cuidad (The City)” - Tells four stories of recent immigrants to New York City: a group of day-laborers scavenging for bricks; two teenagers from the same hometown who meet and fall in love; a homeless father who tries to enroll his daughter in school; and a garment worker who seeks justice in the sweatshops.This film will be shown on Tuesday September 12 at 4 p.m. Approximate length: 90 mins.

·        Osama” - Chronicles the true story of a young girl in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan who must disguise herself as a boy to save her family from starvation. The first feature film made in Afghanistan in the post-Taliban era. Special features include "Sharing hope and freedom" interview featurette with writer, director Siddiq Barmak. This film will be shown on Wednesday, September 13 at 10 a.m. Approximate length:  90 minutes.

September 11

What:  The Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present a program in commemoration of the five year anniversary of 9/11.

Location:  Live Oak Pavilion of the University Center

                  FAU’s Boca Raton campus

Description:  Commemorative events will include -

  • 12:30 p.m. - Multimedia Display: Images from the 9/11 documentary photographic collection, Here is New York* * Courtesy of the Jaffe Book Arts Collection, Wimberly Library      
  • 12:30 p.m. - Storytelling Performance: A Peace Tale, Dr. Caren Neile, director of the South Florida Storytelling Project and Artist-in-Residence in the School of Communication
  • 12:45 p.m. - Personal Reflections and Poem Recital: excerpts from When the Towers Fell*, performed by Trent Blanton and Rebecca Simon, MFA Students, Department of Theatre, School of the Arts
  • 1 p.m. - Lecture: September 11: Creating History of A Different Kind by Professor Sushil Mittal, director of the Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence, James Madison University; remarks on 9/11 and the 100th anniversary of Gandhi’s non-violent resistance in South Africa; presented by Peaceful Mind/Peaceful World, a community outreach program of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters’ Peace Studies program.
