BOCA RATON, FL (August 1, 2006) – Members of the Florida Atlantic University Owl Club recently gathered for a happy hour at Duffy’s Sports Grill in Boca Raton to celebrate FAU’s 79th place ranking in the nation by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). In conjunction with USA Today and the United States Sports Academy, NACDA recognized FAU for its Division I athletic programs and accomplishments. This national ranking places FAU in the top 24 percent of 326 NCAA Division I universities. FAU was the only school in either the Sun Belt or Atlantic Sun Conferences that placed in the top 100 and was the 4th highest ranked program in the state of Florida, finishing behind the University of Florida, Florida State University and the University of Miami.
Attending the event were Head Football Coach Howard Schnellenberger, Head Men’s Basketball Coach Rex Walters, Head Women’s Basketball Coach Chancellor Dugan, Head Men’s Tennis Coach David Komie ’85 and Head Women’s Soccer Coach Brian Dooley, along with Owl Club President Richard Staller, DDS. Former FAU Football player Chris Laskowski ’04, who is currently with the Indianapolis Colts, was also in attendance.
The FAU Owl Club is the official organization that supports FAU Athletics. Financial assistance from Owl Club members helps build the University’s athletic program, develop outstanding facilities and fund scholarships for FAU’s talented student athletes. More than 450 student athletes in 18 sports benefit from Owl Club support each year. The Owl Club provides members with opportunities to volunteer and participate in exclusive social and networking events. Members also receive a number of special athletic benefits according to their level of participation.
The FAU Owl Club will continue to host happy hours throughout the 2006-07 season. The next Happy Hour will be held on Thursday, August 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Tarpon Bend Food and Tackle in Fort Lauderdale.
