FAU’s School of Public Administration Hosts “Property Tax and Local Government Budgets” Panel Discussion

            FT. LAUDERDALE, FL (July 3, 2007) - Florida Atlantic University’s School of Public Administration, part of FAU’s College of Architecture, Urban & Public Affairs, and the American Society for Public Administration – Gold Chapter will sponsor a public panel discussion entitled “Property Tax and Local Government Budgets.”  The discussion will be held on Wednesday, July 11 from noon to 2 p.m. at FAU’s Fort Lauderdale campus, located at 111 East Las Olas Blvd., in room 908 of the Higher Education Complex.

            The panel discussion will include Florida State Senator Ted Deutch, Florida State Representative Jim Waldman, Broward County Property Appraiser Lori Parrish and Director of Financial Services for Tamarac Steven Chapman.  Sun-Sentinel columnist Anthony Man will provide introduction to the topic.  Dr. Hugh Miller, a professor in FAU’s School of Public Adminstration, will serve as moderator and host.

            Panelists will speak on property tax inequity, proposals for changing the homestead formula, the difficulties that local governments face and strategies available for meeting the challenges of decreased revenue.

            “What will be the implications of the new property tax law on cities and counties?  Will local governments be experiencing a revenue crisis?” said Miller.  “For local governments, these are anxious times.  They are scrambling to make ends meet.”
