FAU Honors Summer Institute Hosts Closing Ceremony
BOCA RATON, FL (July 27, 2006) –Florida Atlantic University’s Honors Summer Institute (HSI), hosted by the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, will honor its inaugural year students with a closing ceremony on Saturday, July 29 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Administration Auditorium, FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus, Jupiter.
The closing day marks the end of the three-week program and will include a parent/student brunch at 10 a.m. The closing ceremony will include a slide show at 12:50 p.m., remarks from Dr. Keith Jakee, HSI program director, at 12:30 p.m. and remarks from the dean of the Honors College at 1:15 p.m. FAU President Frank T. Brogan will address the students and present certificates at 1:30 p.m., as part of the Institute’s graduation.
“This year’s Honors Summer Institute has attracted some of the most capable and ambitious students from around Florida and elsewhere,” said Jakee. “I’m confident, moreover, that we have challenged each of our students in several ways. In addition to the obvious academic challenges of taking an honors-level college course compressed into three weeks, they have had to develop their critical thinking, their oral and written communication techniques, and they have had to reconsider their studying, time management, and even leadership skills.”
Students who participated in the program received three college credits for either a course in biotechnology, bioethics, or evolution, psychology and human nature. Scripps Florida scientists also led afternoon lectures and discussions, addressing topics such as prion diseases, targeting protein kinases in drug discovery, and obesity and the regulation of food intake.
Although most school evenings were devoted to studies and class preparation, students were treated to optional films, a minor league baseball game, as well as a beach party, bowling, a kayaking trip, and a trip to the Kennedy Space Center.
