FAU Ranks Among Top 100 Colleges and Universities in Producing Undergraduate Degrees for Minorities

BOCA RATON, FL (July 13, 2006) - Florida Atlantic University was ranked as one of the top 50 four-year colleges in the nation for conferring bachelor’s degrees to African-Americans according to a survey in “Diverse: Issues in Higher Education,” a magazine published bi-weekly that informs leaders from academe, industry and public policy about current trends and issues that are going on in the United States.

“Florida Atlantic University is very proud of its diverse student body,” said FAU President Frank T. Brogan. “Being recognized in several disciplines and among many ethnicities for great achievements is exciting for the whole university.”

            For the 2004-05 academic year, FAU conferred a total of 1,407 bachelor’s degrees in all disciplines for all minorities and ranked 37th, up six percent from the previous year. Among traditionally white institutions, FAU was ranked 16th overall in conferring bachelor’s degrees to African-American students.

            Other notable rankings include:

  • Half of the 66 minority students receiving bachelor’s degrees in biological and biomedical sciences were African- American students, ranking FAU 22nd among 55 institutions. FAU also ranked 39th in delivering these type of degrees to Hispanic students.
  • In conferring bachelor’s degrees in business management, marketing and related support services, overall, FAU ranked 28th in the nation, 24th in the African-American students’ category, 30th for American Indian students and 20th for Hispanics.
  • For the number of bachelor’s degrees in education conferred to all minority students in the field of education, FAU ranked 18th.

FAU’s student population of 26,000 showcases diversity, with 58 percent of the student body being Caucasian, 17 percent African-American, 16 percent Hispanic, five percent international and four percent Asian.
